3 C 459 : A highly asymmetric radio galaxy with a starburst
نویسندگان
چکیده
Multifrequency radio observations of the radio galaxy 3C459 using MERLIN, VLA and the EVN, and an optical HST image using the F702W filter are presented. The galaxy has a very asymmetric radio structure, a high infrared luminosity and a young stellar population. The eastern component of the double-lobed structure is brighter, much closer to the nucleus and is significantly less polarized than the western one. This is consistent with the jet on the eastern side interacting with dense gas, which could be due to a merged companion or dense cloud of gas. The HST image of the galaxy presented here exhibits filamentary structures, and is compared with the MERLIN 5-GHz radio map. EVN observations of the prominent central component, which has a steep radio spectrum, show a strongly curved structure suggesing a bent or helical radio jet. The radio structure of 3C459 is compared with other highly asymmetric, Fanaroff-Riley II radio sources, which are also good candidates for studying jet-cloud interactions. Such sources are usually of small linear size and it is possible that the jets are interacting with clouds of infalling gas that fuel the radio source.

Timescales of merger , starburst and AGN activity in radio galaxy B 2 0648 + 27
In this paper we use neutral hydrogen (H I) and optical spectroscopic observations to compare the timescales of a merger event, starburst episode and radio-AGN activity in the radio galaxy B2 0648+27. We detect a large ring-like structure of H I in emission around the early-type host galaxy of B2 0648+27 (M H I = 8.5 × 10 9 M ⊙ , diameter = 190 kpc). We interpret this as the result of a major m...
متن کاملImaging Atomic and Highly Excited Molecular Gas in a Z=6.42 Quasar Host Galaxy: Copious Fuel for an Eddington-limited Starburst at the End of Cosmic Reionization
We have imaged CO(J=7→6) and C I(P2→ P1) emission in the host galaxy of the z=6.42 quasar SDSS J114816.64+525150.3 (hereafter: J1148+5251) through observations with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer. The region showing CO(J=7→6) emission is spatially resolved, and its size of 5 kpc is in good agreement with earlier CO(J=3→2) observations. In combination with a revised model of the collisional ...

We present a 9 ′ × 9 ′ fully-sampled map of the CO J = 1 − 0 emission in the nearby starburst galaxy Maffei 2 obtained at the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory. The map reveals previously known strong CO emission in the central starburst region as well as an extended asymmetric distribution with bright CO lines at the ends of the bar and in a feature at the northeast edge of the molecula...
متن کاملRadio emission and active galactic nucleus feedback in post-starburst galaxies
We investigate radio-mode AGN activity among post-starburst galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to determine whether AGN feedback may be responsible for the cessation of star formation. Based on radio morphology and radio loudness from the FIRST and NVSS data, we separate objects with radio activity due to an AGN from ongoing residual star formation. Of 513 SDSS galaxies with stro...
متن کاملRadio Loud Far-infrared Galaxies
We present the first results of a multiwavelength study of IRAS galaxies with excess radio emission. The sample was selected by cross-correlating the IRAS Faint Source Survey (for lbl 2 50') and the Point Source Catalogue (for 10' < lbl < 50') with the Texas radio survey. Recent optical (imaging and spectroscopic) and radio (VLA) observations are discussed. These observations will be used to in...
